the number of, a nunmber of 有什么区别

the number of: ...的数量 ,...的数字,后面动词形式用单数,因为看的是number,它用的是单数,所以后面就用单数,但如果它用复数,则也用复数.
a nunmber of： 许多的
或者再详细一些:
a number of 意思是“许多...”，后接复数名词，谓语通常用复数：
A number of students were absent from the meeting.
许多学生没有到会。
the number of 意思是“.....的总数”，后接复数名词，但谓语要用单数：
The number of students absent from the meeting was surprising.
没有到会的学生人数很惊人。
所以由上可知，两者之后都可加复数名词，但谓语动词用法不一样！

the number of：......的数量，主语为the number
后面的谓语是单数（is,was）；
The number of the students is over 800.
学生的数目超过800
a number of意思是许多，相当于many，后面的谓语用复数（are，were)
A number of students have been to Shangdong
许多学生都去过山东
