Born Melissa Arnette Elliott, she was originally part of the late 80's group Sista, as both singer and songwriter. In 1991, the group caught the eye of DeVante Swing (of the group Jodeci) and signed them on to Elektra records, based in New York. Along with the group came the group's producer Timothy Mosley (now known as Timbaland) and their friend Melvin Barcliff (now known as Magoo).
