荷兰首都阿姆斯特丹位于须德海西南岸，是荷兰最大城市和第二大港，人口69万，连同郊区共105万人。它只是荷兰法定的首都，因为王室、国会和多数政府机关、外交使团都驻在60千米以外的海牙市，女王只有在举行重大庆典和接待国宾时，才临时来到阿姆斯特丹履行国家元首的职责。
这里原本是一片芦苇丛生的沼泽地，由于靠近北海，便于贸易，12世纪时当地渔民开始在此定居，13世纪末形成一座小城。后来逐渐围海扩建，到14世纪已成为东西方贸易的重要港口。这是一座用桩支撑起来的“海底城市”，大部分地区处在海平面4米以下，靠拦海大坝和抽水设备保证城市的安全。整个城市有几百万根涂着黑油的木桩打入地下十几米的深处，仅王宫下面就竖着13659根这样的支撑物。
阿姆斯特丹是一座风光奇丽的水城，有“北方威尼斯”之称。市内有160多条大小水道，将城市分割成无数的小岛，1000多座风格各异的桥梁穿梭其间，其中300多座可以通行车辆。水道分布规则，状似蛛网，将城市一层一层围成半圆形。大小运河堤岸平直，船只可以自由地航行到市区的任何地方。运河两岸芳草萋萋，鲜花盛开，林立的现代化大厦与无数的古代建筑交相辉映。城郊草原连片，牛群悠闲，一派欧洲田园风光。一位法国地理学者赞叹地说：“这是荷兰最奇异的城市，比事务性的鹿特丹和官署中心的海牙更奇特。阿姆斯特丹才是所有荷兰城市中真正的荷兰城。”
风车是荷兰的标志。据说，世界上第一座风车就是荷兰人于1408年发明的。荷兰风车最多时曾达到9000多座。
