This paper presents a methodology to determine the profile of a tourist for each type of accommodation offered at a rural holiday destination. A key tool in this study has been the classification of rural accommodation establishments into homogeneous groups by means of a HOMALS and a cluster analysis. In spite of the difficulties involved in a technique based on qualitative variables, the study has shown its usefulness in obtaining the different typologies of existing accommodations at a rural tourist destination. By using the Multinomial Logit the probabilities are calculated for each one of the different groups of accommodation being chosen according to the characteristics of the tourists who have decided to spend their holidays at that destination. Hence, it is possible to detect those characteristics or preferences of the tourist that will influence most when choosing one type of accommodation as opposed to another.
