Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been used industrially as a
dispersant in the synthesis of the (co) polymer emulsions
of vinyl acetate (VAc). Low-molecular-weight emulsifiers
such as sodium dodecyl sulfate are rarely utilized in
these cases, although the emulsion polymerization using
the emulsifiers proceeds easily. On the contrary, PVA is
not substantially utilized in commercial copolymer
emulsions such as poly (styrene/butadiene), and poly
(acrylic esters), due to poor stability during the
polymerization. The poor stability during the polymerization
has been believed to arise from the poor grafting
ability of conjugated monomers such as styrene, acrylates,
and methacrylates. There are several reasons to
adopt PVA in the commercial (co) polymer emulsions of
VAc [1]. The mechanical properties, such as tensile
strength, Young’s modulus, and creep resistance are
enhanced by PVA in the emulsion films. This is one
