答案是return,我选的left,因为我觉得也可以译为他们离开“我”家时，我悲伤

这里的‘return’ home， 是说他们回自己平常居住的家，所以没错。

可能跟上下文有关？这里的家是指他们的家，所以用回家

这句是指当他们回家的时候。如果用left要说when they left my home.这样才表述清楚。。。
