端平二年（1235年），蒙军首次南侵，被击退。蒙军并不甘心失败，于次年九月和第三年两次南侵，其前部几乎接近长江北岸。由于宋军奋勇作战，打败蒙军，再一次挫败蒙军度江南下的企图。而后，南宋军民又在抗蒙将领孟拱、孟瑛、余玠等人的指挥下，多次击败蒙军，使其不得不企图绕道而行。开庆元年（1259年），蒙古大汗蒙哥在征战合州时受宋军的流矢所伤因而死于军中。其弟忽必烈正于鄂州与宋军交战，听到消息后，立即准备撤军以便夺取大汗之位，贾似道借机派人与忽必烈议和，以保太平。这样忽必烈直接返回北方自立为汗。咸淳七年（1271年），忽必烈在中原建国号为元。咸淳十年（1274年）七月九日，度宗去世，终年35岁。
