Abstract
Reactive specialties arise in response to public
events, rather than in response to some scientific
discovery. Examples are specialties that arise in
response to epidemics, terrorist attacks, military
research, or sudden influxes of government funding.
We show that timeline and crossmapping techniques
are particularly suited to mapping and monitoring
reactive specialties, producing results that can be used
to inform subject matter experts and policy decision
makers who need timely and actionable information as
part of their monitoring activities. The mapping
technique is based on finding ‘research fronts’
consisting of groups of articles clustered using
bibliographic coupling. Timelines of research fronts
show the specialty dynamics and are particularly
responsive to fast changes in the specialty. Crossmaps
of research fronts against other groups of
