13.5 Types of steel structure
It is helpful in this section to review the classes of structure in
which structural steelwork finds its principal applications.
Accurate statistics of use are elusive, the best available being
recorded by the British Steel Corporation (BSC). However, the
rolling mills produce a much greater tonnage of plates and
sections than are revealed in construction statistics. Much of
this difference is accounted for by sales to stockholders, the
ultimate destiny being obscure, the motor industry for truck and
trailer bodies, crane manufacturers, pressure vessels, scaffolding,
etc. There remains, though, an inexplicable discrepancy in
the figures.
Below is given a schedule of types of structure, followed by
guidance on some of them which it is hoped will prove of
assistance in the early stages of design.
