一般的分类方法有以下几种：
①按穿着组合分类：整件装、套装、外套、背心、裙、裤等
②按用途分类：分为内衣和外衣两大衣。内衣紧贴人体，起护体、保暖、整形的作用；外衣则由于穿着场所不同，用途各异，品种类别很多。又可分为：社交服、日常服、职业服、运动服、室内服、舞台服等。
③按服装面料与工艺制作分类：中式服装、西式服装、刺绣服装、呢绒服装、丝绸服装棉布服装、毛皮服装、针织服装、羽绒服装等。
④按穿着对象分类：有男装、女装、儿童服装
⑤按特殊功用分类：有耐热的消防服、高温作业服、不透水的潜水服、高空穿着的飞行服、宇航服、高山穿着的登山服等
