主人公小林大悟(Daigo Kobayashi )是一名小提琴家，乐团解散后，他和妻子回到家乡，却误打误撞的参加了入殓师(Okuribito)的面试
入殓，是为刚去世不久的人，进行化妆打扮等一系列工作，并举行入棺仪式的工作。大悟万万没有想到会是这样的事，在社长的百般劝说下，他勉强接下了工作。
不久，大悟开始了入殓师的工作，他每天都与社长一起，在晚秋时节的庄内平原上四处奔波。
他见识到了各种各样的死者，以及与他们生离死别的人们之后，渐渐体会到入殓师的职责所在。
但是他的妻子却离开了他
妻子的离去，令他倍受打击。但是，大悟的工作信念并未动摇。 春天来了，庄内平原一片生机，大悟渐渐成为了一位能独当一面的的入殓师
终于，妻子回到了大悟身边。他们却在此时听到了大悟父亲去世的消息。他的父亲在他很小时就抛弃了他和母亲，因此大悟一直怨恨着他。大悟被妻子说服，为父亲入殓，却发现父亲的手中紧紧的握着在大悟小时候，父亲承诺每年都要送给他的代表自己心意的石头
“爸爸....”在一声呼唤中，大悟也终于解开了自己的心结
