except“除了...”，except for“除了...之外还有...”，for后接的内容也包括在内，but类同except

except for,除了 for 是指某一个
but-但是

except 除了 （except所指的项目，必须在主句里有所交待. 比较的是同类项。）
-The room has no furniture except a broken chair.
（主句里交待了furniture）
-Everybody except Tom was able to swim cross the river.
除了Tom，大家都游过了河。
-He listens to nothing except hiphop.
他除了hiphop什么都不听。

except for 除了（except for就不用主句里交待这类东西. 可以比较不同类的东西）
-The room is empty except for a broken chair.
（主句只说‘房间是空的’）

-Your composition is good except for the beginning.
你的作文除了开头都很好。
-We enjoyed the concert except for the audience noise.
