本文研究的对象是中国当代文学的重要作家王小波，主要关注王小波的历史小说——《青铜时代》，分析王小波小说中不断出现的城意象，探讨他对城以及人的理解，考察这种书写的渊源，进而研究王小波小说的独特价值，确立王小波在中国当代文学史上的地位。
本文从王小波的具体文本出发，利用符号学的方法，运用文本细读的策略，从对“城的分类”、“城与人的关系”、“跳出手掌心”这三个方面进入王小波的小说——《青铜时代》，阐释其独特的艺术魅力。第一部分，笔者针对王小波文本中随处可见的“城”的意象，运用符号学理论，将其分类为显性的城和隐性的城，进行细化分析，通过文本的解读，进一步深入体会和理解王小波小说丰富复杂的底蕴。第二部分，笔者通过对城与人关系的考察和论述，分析城的符指意义，城对人的规训导致了人生存的困境。同时，王小波又把现实生活带入到小说中，从而以寓言化的方式向我们揭示了始终拘禁我们的真实生活的“城”，揭示了人类无可逃脱的生存境遇。第三部分，通过对前两部分的分析，笔者发现王小波对人生存困境是以现实生活作为基础的，但同时又以一种超越的姿态和高度向我们揭示了一种生命的诗意栖息，一种自由精神，并且以此作为消解生活的种种设置，并对那些设置在生活中的人性的障碍完成“跳出手掌心”的目的。王小波以一种全新的姿态来看待现实世界，并通过对“城”的描绘与书写来完成一种对权力进行的智性反抗。这是王小波小说独特魅力的所在。
综上三点，笔者完成了对王小波小说《青铜时代》这部小说集的个人的一个侧面的探索，相信随着王小波被越来越多的大众所接受，他的思想、品性以及伟大的人格也会被更多的人所理解。
