Taking a process view across the functional specialism has important implications for the nature of management information. Both Deming [6], and Senge[7], among others, have described the need to adopt a holistic view of the organization and its environment via systems thinking. The outcomes of processes which cross many different functions will be dependent on many factors outside the routine operational control of any one manager within a specific functional specialism. An understanding of the impact of individual decisions on the outcomes of a multifunctional process or system, therefore, requires an understanding of the interaction and linkages between criterion parts of that process/system.
