为什么要用but而不是and?

The sun was warm but not too hot.
阳光是暖和的，可是不太热，
but=可是

not作为提示

but 但是
and 和

太阳是温暖的但是不是很热

“今天很暖和但是不热” “今天暖和而且不热” 楼主觉得哪个更合适点呢？

可以这样理解：the sun was hot but not too hot!

too 强调过分 “太。。。” 是一种贬义倾向的词
而前文的warm是褒义词。 二者构成了 转折和对比。所以用BUT
