Anne Frank - her life in letters is about Anne Frank as a correspondent. We know that Anne Frank wrote her diary in the form of letters. Less well known however is the fact that she was already an enthusiastic letter writer before then. Between 1935 and 1942, the year when she went into hiding, she sent a number of notes and letters, including some to her family in Switzerland. Her writings evolved from hastily scribbled jottings in German to fully-fledged letters in Dutch, a form she also adopted for her diary from June 1942 onwards.

Her original correspondence, which has never been exhibited and which remains unpublished in part, is the unifying theme of the exhibition. The public will make the acquaintance of a still carefree Anne Frank, who goes to school and plays with her girl friends outdoors on the Merwedeplein.
