1969年：1月，越南民主共和国、美国双方会谈扩大为包括越南南方民族解放阵线及越南共和国在内的四方会谈。美国在南越开始推行“战争越南化” 政策。6月，越南南方民族解放阵线和其他组织宣布成立以黄晋发为首的越南南方共和革命临时政府。9月，越南民主共和国主席胡志明去世，孙德胜当选主席。
1973年：1月27日，美国签署《关于在越南战争结束、恢复和平的协定》。3月29日，美军完全从南越撤出。
越南战争历时进12年，美军死亡5.8万人，受伤30万人，耗费4000多亿美元。越南战争给美国人民造成了无法估量的心灵创伤，美苏争霸的格局因此而向有利于苏联的转化。
1975年：4月30日，北越攻占西贡，南越政权覆灭，越南战争结束。
1976年：1月2日越南社会主义共和国成立，越南统一.
