Like most Americans our nation’s financial crisis has captured my attention. It seems to me that part of our current difficulty is that our national leaders find themselves not only in a financial crisis, but also a credibility crisis.

When she thought I was lying to her, my late mother would remind me of the fable called “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” My mom’s emphasis on the fable rested upon the boy’s habit of lying. The sad outcome of his habit was that when he needed credibility, he had none. I only get one chance to lose my credibility.

My credibility rests upon my ability to accurately describe a situation without an excessive amount of personal interpretation or spin thrown into the description. Honesty, then, is built from accurate reporting not from spin. Like everyone else, I find it a challenge to limit my desire to spin information in favor of my point of view.
