What is the origin of the word camera?

It comes from the arabic word (AL QAMRA- الق�...رة) which means: the dark room with a small window. This room was invented and used by the Muslim Arab scientist Bin Al-Haitham as He gave the first clear description and correct analysis of the (camera ( Al qamara or Al Camara). (Dark room) which is the basis of our modern Camera.

He is the writer of The book of optics that had an important influence on the development of optics, as it laid the foundations for modern physical optics after drastically transforming the way in which light and vision had been understood.

History of the camera
