Similarly in longer texts both structure and meaning help us to predict; meaning assumes more importance as we become familiar with the topic and the writer’s way of treating it. If we can predict that the writer is likely to present opposing arguments, we shall not be confused by them; if we can see that she is describing a farmer’s work only to illustrate an economic theory, we shall not be surprised when she next turns to the work of a miner. This kind of longer term prediction is one of the attractions of stories: speculation about what will happen urges us to read to the end.
