什么是Ph.D

PhD is Doctor of Philosophy.

Philosophy is the foundation of all knowledge. No matter what major you are in, you will receive a PhD if you are able to go through the program and eventually create new knowledge to enrich the base of philosophy.

Philosophy here means knowledge. It has nothing to do with laziness of Americans. By the way, Americans are not lazy.
