The track was originally penned for singer Roy Orbison. In 1987, the songwriters recorded Orbison singing two takes of the song, but nothing was done with the tapes since at that time Roy didn't have a record deal. The tapes were shelved until after Orbison's death. Roy's version, remixed by Jeff Lynne, would appear on his posthumous King of Hearts album. The track has since been covered by many others too, most notably by Céline Dion (number one in Canada and Spain, but only #49 in the U.S.). While Dion's version was charting, a version of the song by the group Pinmonkey also made the Country Top 40.

Cyndi Lauper said she wanted to do it because she liked the idea "of a woman driving, of a woman in control." She said she liked the unique concept.
