Theodore Dreiser shows the readers vividly the causes and the murderer's complex psychological activities through spectacular social background and detailed discription to the characters. However, it's safe to say that Dreiser is interested in studying a victim of the "American Dream" at that time, instead of the practices of the case itself. In Dreiser's age, there were many young people from lower and poorer class that wanted to rise up in the society by accidentally getting money or by marrying a rich girl, and then enjoyed the wealth and power they brought to them.
