前期（prophase）：
染色质逐渐凝缩变粗，起先是卷曲为一团乱麻，继而能分清各个染色体，且明显可以见到每条染色体都是由两条染色单体构成的，两条染色单体共用一个着丝点。核仁和核膜逐渐变得模糊不清。纺锤丝（spindle fiber）开始形成。
中期（metaphase）：
核仁和核膜完全消失，纺锤体（spindle）明显可见。从细胞的侧面观察，各个染色体的着丝点均排列在纺锤体中央的赤道面上，而其两臂则自由地伸展在赤道面的两侧（图mitosis-metaphase-cemianguan)。此时，染色体具有典型的形状，适于观察和记数(图2-8-1)。
后期（anaphase）：
每个染色体的着丝粒分裂为二，每条染色体的两条染色单体各自分开而成为两条独立的染色体，并在纺锤丝的牵引下分别移向两极。移向两极的染色体数目是完全一样的，且同分裂前母细胞的染色体 数目、形态完全一样(图mitosis-anaphase)。
末期（telophase）：染色体已移至两极(图mitosis-telophase)，围绕者染色体重新出现核仁核膜，染色体又重新变得松散细长，回复为染色质的状态。至此，一个母细胞内形成了两个子核。接着在纺锤体的赤道板区域形成细胞板，细胞质被分隔开,一个母细胞分裂为两个完全相同的子细胞。继而，子细胞又进入G1期。
有丝分裂的全过程是一个连续的过程，划分为前，中，后，末四个时期是人为的，只是为叙述方便而已，在实际分裂过程中绝无明显的间隔。有丝分裂所需时间，因物种和外界环境而异，在250c下，蚕豆根尖细胞约需2hr，而豌豆根尖细胞只需83分钟。在30c下，蚕豆根尖细胞则需880分钟。在分裂过程中，前期持续的时期最长，约占整个分裂时间的一半甚至更多。
