The relationship between language and gender, a major issue in the sociolinguistics, started in the early 1970s in the United States. Two domains of language behaviors were specifically investigated: speech behaviors of men and women on the phonological level, and the interaction behavior (conversational styles) between men and women in discourse. On the basis of the former study, this paper is to present a framework of gender differences reflected in the phonological, lexical and stylistic level, describe differences with references to the markedness theory as well as the interactional gender differences occurring in actual verbal communication, aiming to find some new perspectives in the observation and the explanation of those differences.
