Radio and newspaper were not substitutes for each other, but actually supported each other. You see the relationship between different media is not always one of displacement but can be one of inforcement. However, this is not always the case. Take television and film for example. With the popularity of TV, the film industry suffered greatly. Movie attendants dropped when the audience chose to stay at home and be entertained.
