比较过去两个动作!
主语说是过去的动作,话里动作的行使者是发生在主语说话过去的动作!所以用完成时!
that night指不明确的时间!
he said,;"were the windows open?"
He asked if the windows had been open.
he said,"why didn't she help me?"
He asked why she hadn't helped him.
he said,"how did lucy come that night?"
He asked how lucy had come that night.

Past tense changes to past perfect in reported speech. In colloquial language if there is specific time reference, we can use past tense unchanged, but still past perfect is grammatically correct and preferable.
直接引语变间接引语时时态的变化：
1.现在时变成过去时 一般现在时变成一般过去时，现在进行时变为过去进行时，现在完成时变为过去完成时，一般将来时变为过去将来时。
2.过去时态变成了过去的过去 一般过去时变成过去完成时，过去进行时变为过去完成进行时。
补充：1.若直接引语里陈述的是客观事实、真理，间接引语用一般现在时。
2.若直接引语含有明确的、绝对的表示过去的时间状语，时态不变，仍维持一般过去时。
