雾都孤儿主要讲述了孤儿奥利弗从济贫院到伦敦的坎坷经历。他身世可怜，常常被人欺负，到了伦敦后又被骗加入扒手团伙，还差点丧命。然而奥利弗最让人感动的地方是他的善良，无论别人怎样对他，他都以善心相待。最终善良战胜了邪恶，奥利弗也迎来了属于自己的光明未来。
从济贫院出来的奥利弗在一家棺材店里做学徒，店里没几个人善待他。一次，奥利弗被师兄诺亚的辱骂所激怒，一怒之下打了诺亚。
奥利弗离开了棺材店，决定走路到伦敦。走了七天，他终于来到了鱼龙混杂的伦敦。在这里，他遇到了扒手狡猾鬼以及团伙首领费金。
在费金的怂恿下，奥利弗学会了扒手的伎俩。他随另外两个男孩上街作案时被逮住，幸而有人证明他没有偷东西才被释放。好心的布朗罗先生看到了奥利弗的善良，决定收留他。
费金和同伙比尔怕奥利弗会泄露他们的秘密，于是使用诡计把他抓了回来。团伙里一个同样是孤儿出身的女子南希十分同情奥利弗，她尽其所能维护他。
得知费金和比尔将要杀死奥利弗，南希向布朗罗先生告了密，由此引来杀身之祸。
南希被杀害，警察通缉费金和比尔。比尔在警察围捕中丧命，费金被抓，并被判处绞刑。行刑前，奥利弗去见已经神志不清的费金最后一面。
