除了联邦法庭的一般裁判权外，有时也有必要为了特殊目的而设立法庭。这些法庭称为“立法”法庭，因为这些法庭是根据国会的行动而设立的。这些法庭的法官，正如其他联邦法院的同等法官一样，都是由总统任命，经参议院批准，任职终生。
这些特别法庭中，最重要的也许就是索债法庭，该法庭成立于1855年，目的是对那些向美国提出的赔款申诉做出判决。其他特别法庭包括关税法庭，此法庭对涉及进口货物的税款或限额的民事诉讼享有独有的审判权。另外还有关税及专利权上诉法庭，此法庭听取不服关税法院和美国专利局判决的上诉申请。

Besides the general judgment power of federal court, sometimes it is necessary to set up courts for special purpose. These courts are called "legislation" courts, since they are established according to the actions of congress. The judges of the courts are appointed by the president and approved by the senate, just as the equivalent judges of other federal courts; the judges can hold office through lifetime.
Among these special courts, the most important one may be the debt claim court which is established in 1855, aiming at judging the claim appeals to the U.S.. The other courts comprise tariff court which enjoys the unique jurisdiction to the civil litigation of tax or limitation relative to import and export goods. Besides, there are appeal court for tariff and patent right which handles the appeal applications refused to accept from the Tariff Court and American Patent Office.
