Wuxi has an ancient tradition of folk art. Of Wuxi’s many local products, the following are most famous: the Huishan Clay Figures, Wuxi embroidery, and Wuxi carvings.

The most famous being the Huishan Clay Figures. Local legend has it that four demons used to terrorize the inhabitants of Wuxi. Then one young man decided to defend the citizens against the demons and when he had vanquished the monsters, he was held in great reverence among the locals. In his honor, clay figures were made in his likeness: with rounded heads, big faces, and ears, which reached down to their shoulders.

Later, a female clay figure was added to the male figure. The locals named the figures Da A Fu, meaning blessings from heaven. The Da A Fu figures are hung in people’s homes and used to ward off evil spirits. The beautifully decorated clay figures are usually very small, some no bigger than a few centimeters long.
