Selection of the routes for synthesizing dialkylaryl disulfonic acids. In
general, there are two routes for synthesizing dialkylaryl disulfonic
acids, known as the single-step and double-step routes.
The double-step route includes two chemical reactions, as depicted
in Scheme 1 (8).
After the C14 AOS acid reacted with the aromatic to form
arylalkyl sulfonic acid, the residual aromatic was removed
from the system. The arylalkyl sulfonic acid then continued
to react with the C14 AOS acid to produce dialkylaryl disulfonic
acid. The double-step method is not only time-consuming
and tedious, but it can also result in many side reactions
and affect the quality of the final product because of its long
reaction time. Conversely, the single-step method avoids
these problems. These reaction steps are shown in Scheme 2.
