二、翻译在外语学习中的作用
1．通过翻译掌握外语是外语习得过程中的一段
必经之路
人类的语言种类繁多，据说在4000一8000种之
间，分属不同的语系、语族和语支。各种语言之间之所以能够交流、翻译，就
是以其共性为基础的。语言的共性说明外语学习离
不开认知。学习者已获得的语言知识，必定会对其学
习一门新语言产生影响。
众所周知，外语学习是以母语为起点的，由于学
习者已经掌握了自己的母语，并具备了用母语进行抽
象思维的能力，所以他们理解、掌握目的语一般都借
助母语作为中介。例如，学习者在外语掌握过程中建
立概念与词之间的联系时，往往利用母语相应的词作
为中介。在外语学习过程中一
段相当长的时间里，学习者在接收外语信息时总要用
母语来编码，并依赖母语认知结构储存外语，。笔者曾在几所中小学调查初学英语学生
的学习情况，结果发现，不少中小学生在其英语课本
里的单词下面写了汉语拼音或汉字来帮助读音，在他
们看来，“借用”汉语拼音或汉字来读英语，读起来有
点像总比开不了口要强。在检查大学生预习英语课
文情况时，经常发现他们在生词下面写的是汉字，而
不是该词的英文释义。在给高年级英专的学生授课
时，对于比较难的句子，在用英文解释以后，他们还期
待着翻译。
处于无自然的目的语环境中的外语学习者，学习
外语时一般采取的是这种翻译式。他们认为，如果不
经过把所学的外语用母语“复制”下来这种语码转移
的翻译过程，就总觉得所学的知识不够牢靠(孙晓青，
2002)。当他们要用外语表达思想时，也免不了首先
用母语构思。笔者目睹了英专的毕业论文情况，学校
明文规定论文要用英文写，可有的学生先交来的是用
汉语写的outline(提纲)，有的还将论文先用汉语写，
然后译成英文。这种做法实属下策，但从交际功能来
讲，也有积极的一面，尽管行文有错、不地道，但它使
外语问题较多、外语知识不足的学习者与他人的思想
交流成为可
